About

Since 2013

Our preschool has served Pasadena families with a caring, relationship-driven approach to early childhood education. Built on trust, consistency, and meaningful daily experiences, we have grown through the continued support of families and our local community. Known for our distinctive culinary program, creative learning environment, and year-round support, we continue helping children grow with confidence, character, and joyful readiness for the years ahead.

Mentor Preschool has evolved from a personal need into a thriving learning community grounded in care.

The vision began with GJ’s father, Fil, whose search for a quality preschool for his grandchildren revealed that many programs were either too expensive or already full. With family support and guidance from Peggy, a former preschool owner and educator, that vision gradually took shape. The journey was neither quick nor easy. Renovation and licensing took years, and by opening day on October 2, 2013, the children who first inspired the idea were already too old for preschool. Nevertheless, faith, clarity, and persistence sustained the vision, allowing Mentor Preschool to grow alongside the families it serves as a preschool dedicated to learning, nourishment, creativity, meaningful relationships, and daily connection.

Our Staff

  • GJ Salcedo

With a longstanding commitment to early childhood development, GJ creates a structured, nurturing environment where routines transform into meaningful lessons. He integrates culinary experiences into daily life, placing food at the center of connection, gratitude, and practical skill-building. By involving children in meal preparation, GJ fosters trust, independence, sensory exploration, and responsibility. His leadership draws from his Christian faith, modeling patience, kindness, forgiveness, and empathy in every interaction. He encourages curiosity and resilience, supporting both academic readiness and the development of life skills. Through attentive guidance, GJ empowers children to relate to others with understanding and compassion, ensuring they grow in confidence and character as they prepare for both school and life.

The children you teach may not remember you when they get older, but they will always carry a part of you inside them, the part that gave them hope and love and taught them to believe in themselves.

I enjoy being able to see the children reach their milestones. It brings me joy to see the excitement on their faces when they learn how to do something new. Watching them grow and flourish every day, and knowing that I was a part of that, is the greatest feeling. I love the smiles, hugs, and even being able to wipe away tears by giving them comfort and love when needed.

The experiences and relationships formed during the earliest years play a vital role in a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. I love working with children because it allows me to provide nurturing guidance, foster early learning, and positively influence a child’s lifelong growth and well-being.

Once upon a time, there was a child who believed in themselves, and a teacher who believed in them first. That’s the beauty of little minds.

I love teaching and learning about music together because I believe it is our universal language. I have a few songs on Pop radio that you might recognize, but more importantly, I have two wonderful boys who both attended Mentor Preschool. It is a joy to now bring music into a community that has meant so much to our family.
